Music Class at St. Bede includes much singing, lots of game play - singing games of course, occasionally playing on instruments, preparing new songs for our weekly Masses and learning to be musically literate through it all. This means that at times my students are asked to show written proof of their understanding, using a worksheet or listening test. I am certified in the Kodaly Pedagogy of Music Education. Zoltan Kodaly, a Hungarian Composer and Teacher believed that all children had the right to be musically literate, not just the few that could afford private lessons. This approach is much different than the "sing along" kind of classes to which so many of us may have had exposure. It is my desire that our students won't ever have to say as adults, " I don't sing or read music - I never learned how."
These are some of the activities taking place in the Music Classroom at St. Bede:
Pre-K has been focussing on moving with the music, singing alone, listening carefully to a song or a story, and just plain having fun. They have been singing about Springtime and playing some favorite games.
Kindergarten been learning about the rhythm that the words make in their songs and also to listen for musical phrases that sound the same and different.
1st Grade has been learning to recognize and sing the differing arrangements of so-mi and la in a melody and writing them on the music staff.
2nd Grade has been improving their round singing skills, playing mi-re-do on boomwhackers and melody bells and reading and writing mi-re-do on the staff.
3rd & 4th Graders have been practicing very hard on their recorders, earning their "belts" for Recorder Karate. Recently they learned a thoroughly fun mixer called Sashay the Donut.
5th Grade has continued to advance in the Recorder Karate belts and have been discussing who will sing the solo on the Spring program.
6th Grade strengthened their familiarity with the dotted eighth sixteenth note rhythm through a Japanese "rock - paper - scissors game (Sei Sei) and a round robin card game - I Have / Who Has?
7th Grade have been writing 16 beat rhythms, which they played on "bucket drums."
The 8th Grade, completed their Pop Music projects, followed by a short investigation into the effects that music has on mood in a film - matching the music and scenes from a favorite Pixar movie, "Up."
